Dog Custody Case Gains National Attention

A dog custody case that has gained national attention is in the hearing stage to determine the appropriate jurisdictional venue. Filed in January 2012 in New York Michael Dershowitz sued his ex girlfriend to obtain custody of their pug-beagle mix “Knuckles.” In May the California court sent the case back to New York. What does this case foreshadow in terms of expanded “property” rights in companion animals and whether visitation or monetary support could eventually be awarded?
